For reference, a guided tour focused on the two pyramids takes 1.5 hours, and a more complete one that adds the Citadel and other complexes takes 3 hours.

Teotihuacan lies about 50 km northeast of Mexico City and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Here's what to see at each stop, how to plan your route and when a guide is worth it.

The Avenue of the Dead: the backbone of your visit

The Avenue of the Dead is the grand avenue that forms the main axis of the ancient city and links its major buildings. Walking it gives you a sense of Teotihuacan's scale and takes you from the Citadel all the way to the Pyramid of the Moon.

It's a long walk with little shade, so start early. The archaeological site opens at 9:00 a.m., and arriving at opening time gives you more time before the sun gets intense.

What to see at the Pyramid of the Sun and Moon

The Pyramid of the Sun is a massive structure rising beside the Avenue of the Dead. From its base you can take in its size and the way it dominates the valley landscape.

The Pyramid of the Moon closes off the Avenue of the Dead at its northern end, framed by a plaza lined with platforms. From there you get one of the site's best-known views: the avenue stretching south with the Pyramid of the Sun off to one side.

Rules about climbing the pyramids change, so check at the ticket office which structures are open that day. Even if you can't climb, walking around them up close is well worth it.

The Citadel and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent

At the southern end of the avenue is the Citadel, a large square complex that holds the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, also known as the Temple of Quetzalcoatl. Its facades decorated with stone-carved serpent heads deserve an unhurried stop.

Because it sits at the opposite end from the Pyramid of the Moon, it's easy to skip if you're short on time, so build it into your plan from the start.

The Palace of Quetzalpapalotl and how much time you need

Close to the Plaza of the Moon is the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl, with a courtyard surrounded by carved pillars worth seeing slowly. It makes a nice contrast after the scale of the big pyramids.

A 3-hour visit lets you add these spots without rushing. If you only have a morning, prioritize the Avenue of the Dead, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, then add the Citadel if time allows.

Private guided tour: Essential or In-Depth

A certified local guide helps you understand what you're seeing and make the most of your time. Ruta Mágica offers private tours in Spanish or English: the Essential tour lasts 1.5 hours and focuses on the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, while the In-Depth tour runs 3 hours.

Tours are available with or without transport from Mexico City and start at $759 MXN per person, based on 2 people without transport. Site admission isn't included: in 2026 it's $105 MXN for Mexican citizens and $210 MXN for foreign visitors.

See private tours

If you'd like to start the day from the air, there's a package with a sunrise hot air balloon ride, breakfast and the Essential tour, with transport from Mexico City. The flight ends before the site opens.

See flight + Essential tour

Read next: Teotihuacan Day Trip Itinerary with a Hot Air Balloon Ride

Tips for your visit

Arrive at opening time, 9:00 a.m., to walk before the heat builds.

Bring water, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; shade is scarce.

Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes for long walks.

Mexican nationals get in free on Sundays.

Expect big crowds around the spring equinox and plan ahead.

Read next: Spring Equinox in Teotihuacan: Tips and Hot Air Balloon Rides

Frequently asked questions

How much time do you need for the Pyramid of the Sun and Moon?

For reference, a guided tour focused on both pyramids takes 1.5 hours. Admission is free for Mexican nationals on Sundays.

Are guided tours available in English?

Yes. Private tours are offered with Spanish- or English-speaking guides; other languages aren't available.

Can you see the Pyramid of the Sun from a hot air balloon?

Flights go over the Teotihuacan Valley, but the route depends on the wind, so flying over a specific pyramid can't be guaranteed. The pilot has the final say on takeoff and flight time.

Pyramid of the Sun and Moon in Teotihuacan: what to see, how much time you need, the Avenue of the Dead, the Citadel and smart tips for your visit.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[33

post-1957","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-guias-de-viaje
https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver.webp",1295,864,false
https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver-150x150.webp",150,150,true
https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver-300x200.webp",300,200,true
https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver-768x512.webp",768,512,true
https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver-1024x683.webp",800,534,true],"1536x1536":["https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver.webp",1295,864,false],"2048x2048":["https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver.webp",1295,864,false
https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver-18x12.webp",18,12,true
https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver-300x300.webp",300,300,true
https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver-600x400.webp",600,400,true
https://rutamagica.com.mx/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/piramides-del-sol-y-de-la-luna-que-ver-100x100.webp",100,100,true
Pirámide del Sol y de la Luna en Teotihuacán: qué ver, cuánto tiempo necesitas, la Calzada de los Muertos, la Ciudadela y consejos para tu visita.
["GET
