Globos aerostáticos sobre el Valle de Teotihuacán al amanecer

A Teotihuacan day trip itinerary can start in the sky: a sunrise hot air balloon ride, breakfast, and then the archaeological site once it opens at 9:00 a.m. Teotihuacan sits about 50 km (31 miles) northeast of Mexico City, so you can sleep in the capital that night.

This hour-by-hour plan helps you organize everything. Flight times are a reference and shift with sunrise, weather and wind, but they give you a solid frame for the rest of the day.

Before you go: getting there by 5:30 a.m.

Flight check-in is at 5:30 a.m., and public buses from the Terminal Central del Norte won't get you there in time, since departures start around 7:00 a.m.

You have three options: drive yourself, spend the night before in San Juan Teotihuacan or San Martín de las Pirámides, or book a package with round-trip transport from central Mexico City. Ruta Mágica flights leave from the Vívelo en Globo balloon port on the Libramiento San Martín de las Pirámides.

Teotihuacan day trip itinerary, hour by hour

The balloon's route depends on the wind, so flying over a specific pyramid can't be guaranteed, and the pilot has the final say on takeoff and flight time. The good news is that flights end before the archaeological site opens.

9:00 a.m. to midday: the archaeological site

Arriving early pays off: it's cooler and calmer for walking the Avenue of the Dead, the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Citadel with the Temple of the Feathered Serpent. Rules for climbing the pyramids change, so check at the ticket office which structures are open that day.

Site admission is not included with the flights. In 2026 it costs $105 MXN for Mexican citizens and $210 MXN for foreign visitors, and it's free for Mexican nationals on Sundays.

On your own or with a private guide

You can explore the site on your own or with a certified local guide. Private tours are offered in Spanish or English: the Essential tour lasts 1.5 hours and focuses on the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, while the In-Depth tour runs 3 hours.

If you'd rather make one booking, Ruta Mágica offers the flight, breakfast and Essential tour with round-trip transport from Mexico City for $4,090 MXN per person with a Spanish-speaking guide or $4,290 MXN in English. Private tours without transport start at $759 MXN per person, based on 2 people.

Afternoon: lunch and the trip back to Mexico City

After the pyramids, grab lunch in San Juan Teotihuacan or San Martín de las Pirámides before heading back. The last bus to Mexico City leaves around 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., while Uber or DiDi takes 45 to 75 minutes, though finding a ride back from the pyramids can be tricky.

With a round-trip transport package, the ride home is taken care of. Note that these rates are for 2 to 15 adults; for children or other group sizes, ask for a quote.

Tips to make the most of the day

If you're visiting from abroad, keep in mind that all prices in this guide are in Mexican pesos (MXN). For questions about times or transport, it's best to ask before you book.
