Travel guide · Teotihuacán

Yes, you can take a hot air balloon ride with kids in Mexico's Teotihuacan Valley from age 4. If your child is under 1.20 m (about 3 ft 11 in), ask before booking, and keep in mind that minors fly under the responsibility of parents or guardians, who must be on the same flight.
Watching the sunrise from a basket can become a family memory, but it means an early alarm and a bit of planning. Here are the rules, what the flight includes for kids and tips for a smooth morning.
Rules for a hot air balloon ride with kids
- Minimum age: 4. Children under 4 can't fly.
- Under 1.20 m tall: ask before booking.
- Minors fly under the responsibility of parents or guardians, who must be on the same flight.
- Every passenger signs a liability waiver before boarding.
- If your child has a recent injury or surgery, vertigo or a fear of heights, check with their doctor before booking.
Keep in mind that pregnant women can't fly. If you're expecting, ask the team how to organize the flight for the rest of your family.
What the flight includes for kids
On the shared flight with breakfast, the post-landing toast has a kid-friendly version: juice instead of wine. The package also includes a welcome coffee break, a personalized flight certificate, travel insurance, a buffet breakfast and parking at the balloon port.
The shared flight costs $2,490 MXN per person and includes a banner with a message of your choice, a nice touch for a birthday. If you'd rather book a package with transport from Mexico City, those rates are for 2 to 15 adults, so ask about pricing for children.
What the morning looks like with kids
Check-in is at 5:30 a.m., balloon inflation starts around 5:45 and takeoff is around 6:15. The flight lasts about 45 minutes, landing is around 7:00, and breakfast is around 8:00 a.m.
Watching the balloon inflate is a great moment for kids to see what's about to happen, and for photos. Before boarding, the pilot gives a safety briefing: ask your kids to listen closely and follow instructions throughout the flight.
Times are a reference and shift with sunrise, weather and wind, and the pilot has the final say on takeoff. If the weather isn't safe, there's no flight, and you can reschedule or get a refund.

Tips for an early morning with kids
- Lay out clothes and the bag the night before and get to bed early.
- Dress them in layers: valley mornings are cold even in summer.
- A beanie and gloves help a lot, especially from November to April.
- Comfortable closed-toe shoes, since takeoff and landing are on uneven ground.
- Pack a light snack and water for the drive; the buffet breakfast comes after the flight.
- If the drive is long, consider staying nearby in San Juan Teotihuacan or San Martín de las Pirámides.
Remember the 15-minute grace period: everything takes longer with kids, so leave with time to spare. Bring your government-issued ID, physical or digital, since it works as your boarding pass.

After the flight: pyramids with kids?
The archaeological site opens at 9:00 a.m., right after breakfast, and admission isn't included with the flight. If the kids still have energy, a 1.5-hour private Essential tour of the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon is shorter than a full visit.
Ruta Mágica tours are led by Spanish- or English-speaking guides and are available with or without transport. If you have any questions about ages or heights, ask before you book.
