Vuelo compartido en globo aerostático sobre el Valle de Teotihuacán al amanecer

What to wear on a hot air balloon ride in Teotihuacan comes down to three things: warm layers, comfortable closed-toe shoes and a government-issued ID, physical or digital, which works as your boarding pass. Mornings in the valley are cold even in summer, so dress for sunrise, not for noon.

Check-in at the balloon port is at 5:30 a.m., so it pays to set everything out the night before. Below you'll find what to wear, what to pack, what to leave at home and why being on time matters as much as your jacket.

What to wear on a hot air balloon ride at sunrise

Layers are everything. You head out in the dark when it's chilly, and the temperature climbs once the sun is up, so being able to add or remove a piece makes the morning far more comfortable. From November to April, the dry season, mornings tend to be clearer and colder.

Shoes: closed-toe, comfortable and grippy

Takeoff and landing happen on uneven ground, which is why comfortable closed-toe shoes are a must. Sneakers or light boots are perfect; leave sandals, heels and brand-new shoes that might pinch at home.

At that hour the fields can be damp with dew, so thick socks and shoes that don't soak through easily will keep you comfortable all morning.

Your packing list for the flight

If you pay by card at the balloon port, there's a 5% fee, so booking online with secure payment is usually the easier route. To register each passenger, Ruta Mágica asks for full name, weight, age and phone number.

When taking photos, keep a firm grip on your phone and don't stretch your arm outside the basket. And put the screen away for a few minutes: the valley at sunrise is worth seeing with your own eyes.

What to leave behind

In the basket it's best to travel light with your hands free. Suitcases, big backpacks, bulky bags and long selfie sticks get in the way, so leave them in the car or at your hotel.

Skip the late night out, too: anyone who is drunk or intoxicated can't fly. If you have a recent injury or surgery, vertigo or a heart condition, check with your doctor before booking.

Be on time: there's a 15-minute grace period

The reference schedule starts at 5:30 a.m. with check-in and a welcome coffee, followed by inflation around 5:45 and takeoff around 6:15. The maximum grace period for arrival is 15 minutes; after that, the pilot may take off without you.

Times shift with sunrise, weather and wind, and public buses don't arrive in time for check-in. Your options are driving yourself, spending the night before in San Juan Teotihuacan or San Martín de las Pirámides, or booking the package with round-trip transport from Mexico City.

If you're visiting the pyramids afterward

The shared flight wraps up with a toast, your certificate and a buffet breakfast around 8:00 a.m., and the archaeological site opens at 9:00. If you plan to go, bring a hat, water and extra sunscreen, since you'll be walking in the sun.

Keep in mind that site admission isn't included with the flights. If you have questions about what to bring, the Ruta Mágica team can help on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cold on a hot air balloon ride in Teotihuacan?

Yes. Valley mornings are cold even in summer, and colder still from November to April. Dress in layers so you can peel them off as the sun comes up.

Do I need to bring ID?

Yes. Bring a government-issued ID, physical or digital, because it works as your boarding pass.

Can I bring my phone or camera?

Yes, and you'll want it for the inflation, the takeoff and the view of the valley from above. Use a wrist strap or lanyard case to keep a secure grip.

What happens if I'm late?

The grace period is 15 minutes; after that, the pilot may take off. A no-show counts as a completed service, so plan your drive carefully.

Should I eat before the flight?

There's no need for a full meal: a welcome coffee break is served on arrival, and the shared flight includes a buffet breakfast after landing. A light snack is enough if you get hungry early.
